2023 . FLUTE STUDIO
One day, Tadeu Bittencourt spoke about technique: technique... the artist doesn’t need technique... because if the artist doesn’t have technique, they invent their own technique. This stayed deep in my subconscious for many years.
Last year (2023), when I spent 6 months camping next to a waterfall in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, in the middle of Brazil, I felt like listening to music, so I cut a bamboo and invented a type of flute that, although handmade, has all the notes of a metal transverse flute.
I tuned the flute by ear, playing the songs and noticing which notes were missing. Then, when I checked with the tuner, I saw that all the notes were there, the natural ones and the sharps. One song was by Ivan Lins, *After the Storms*, which descends through the entire scale right at the beginning.
So when I arrived in São Paulo, I was asked where I had learned to play the flute; I answered: by myself. And who taught me to make flutes; I replied: no one, it’s a unique technique for making bamboo flutes.
And then I remembered Tadeu Bittencourt.
