16.CHICO SCIENCE AND ZOOMBINATION
I was a child. And I only liked international rock, of which I didn’t understand a single word. I had spent the first decade of my life listening to Brazilian national rock, and I preferred international rock over a rock with no message, broadcasted by colonialist media.
Then a girl appeared in my life, she had a cassette of Chico Science and Zoombination I thought it was awesome. At that moment, Raimundos, O Rappa, Sepultura, etc., etc., etc. also appeared. Later, I went to the carnival in Olinda in 1996 or 1997, without the girl, I hurt my foot on a broken bottle, left my friends, and so, by chance, I encountered Maracatu Atômico.
Like so many other singers/composers/bands of the time who achieved great international success, they took a political stance and suffered accidents. After all these years, I learned to enjoy genius to the fullest, because it lasts only briefly in a world of interests contrary to genius. The reality is that it has always been this way, but now I am sure it was the right thing.
